Boats for lakes: what to choose for small and large water
A small lake needs a light boat with a shallow draught. On a large lake the bow, the sides and the power matter. How that translates into specific models.

The same lake can be two different waters: flat calm in the morning, wind and a short chop in the afternoon. Still, you choose a boat for the usual conditions and for where you want to get to. This is how we split it.
Small lakes, rivers and backwaters
On small water you fish close to the bank, in the reeds and over the shallows, and you often launch from grass or a short slipway. What counts is a shallow draught, low weight and easy handling.
The Ortiz 420 draws 17 cm and weighs 230–250 kg, so two people can launch it and a modest car can tow it. The Space 440 has the same character with a wider deck: more room when playing a fish, with a 23 cm draught.
Some lakes restrict petrol engines. Check the rules on your water before you buy. Each model page shows whether the boat is prepared for an electric motor.
Medium lakes and reservoirs
Bigger water means longer runs and wind that can raise a chop quickly. The Strin has a sharper bow that cuts through the chop and a flat bottom that still gets into the shallows by the bank. The Strin 500, with a full-size console and two rows of seats, handles both reservoirs and lakes well.
Large lakes
On a large lake the wind raises a short, steep chop and the fishing spot can be a long way out. This is where a Deep-V hull, high sides and power pay off. The Trion series has sides 64 to 70 cm above the deck, engines from 150 to 300 HP and room for six. These are boats you take out for the whole weekend.
